I was lucky enough to photograph some members of Hula Halau O Kamuela when I was back home in Hawaii a few years ago. This halau had just won the prestigious Merrie Monarch festival a few days before (their 2nd win in a row in women's kahiko category!). Along with being able to see my classmate Myrel again, this shoot was awesome in more ways than one because of its authenticity, obvious beauty, and how everyone still stuck with it even as it started to pour rain, which IMO only added to the raw visual nature of it. Featuring Myrel Baptiste, Julyen Kaluna and her boyfriend Kaha, Kamalei Opanaewa, and Tumua Tuinei, this shoot would not have been possible without Haukea Ho, who produced it pretty last minute and I can't thank her enough.
